Any other year, the audience for Dallas Ballet Company’s performance of The Nutcracker would be full of family and fans from the community. During the pandemic this season, some loved ones were forced to skip the show. So (video of) the mountain went to Muhammad.
Eddie’s Audio and Video filmed DBC’s live Nutcracker performance, and DVDs with programs were distributed to hospitals and assisted living facilities all over the metroplex. The ballet won rave reviews.
“It was like I was there watching the performance and clapping along,” said one resident of The Landon at Lake Highlands. “I even stood at the end to give them a ‘Bravo, bravo!’”
Residents at The Landon, C.C. Young, Windsor Senior Living, Crystal Creek at Preston Hollow, Monticello West, Silver Creek, Grand Brook Memory Care and Brookdale Centers received the videos, as did patients at Children’s Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House and Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation.
“I have to admit I did tear up when I was watching the first act since my Grams and I used to watch this together,” praised another Landon resident. “I immediately thought of her and how much she would have loved the performance.”
Hospitals and care facilities traditionally host legions of church, school and music groups to perform around the holidays, singing Christmas carols and playing end-of-year piano recitals. Most have been closed to such outsiders since the pandemic began.
“I love the ballet and was so sad this year I could not go,” shared a Landon resident. “I pretended I was in the room watching a live performance, and it brought me back to happier days.”
Dancers in DBC’s 34th annual Nutcracker production were as young as 6 years old. Dallas Ballet Company is at 8530 Abrams Road.
