A little under a month out from the Wildcats’ opening scrimmage against Coppell, neighbors may be wondering how this year’s LHHS squad will fare in Coach Cory Campbell’s second season.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, widely regarded as a leading source for all things related to high school football in the State, recently published its annual football preview. It predicts that the Wildcats will finish second in District 7-6A, clinching a playoff spot behind projected district champion Dallas Jesuit.
According to DCTF, the Wildcats will return 26 lettermen, including three offensive and six defensive starters. Safety Ayden Webb, a returning starter, was named preseason district defensive MVP.
“In Coach Campbell’s first year Lake Highlands posted a strong nine-win campaign and a playoff victory,” DCTF wrote, “but 2024 could be a bit of a retooling year as 31 seniors graduated. All isn’t lost for LHHS as it has intriguing talent replenishing the ranks from a 7-3 JV squad.”
The magazine named Webb, Quarterback Harrison Day, Wide Receiver Leland Germany, Linebacker Ryan Schirato, OL/DL King David, Safety Lloyd Wyatt and Running Back Christian Rhodes as players to watch this season. Day will look to lead the Wildcats’ offense behind center after spending last season as a wide receiver.
Campbell told DCTF that his biggest concerns lie with inexperience — namely on the offensive side of the ball — and a lack of line depth.
After a second-round loss to Prosper to end the 2023-24 season, Campbell, LHHS’s former offensive coordinator, will look to build upon the foundation of last year’s nine-win season. With several playmakers on defense and a young offensive squad, it remains to be seen whether or not the Wildcats can replicate last year’s success.
