As the Olympics begin across the ocean, there’s tons to do in the neighborhood. So, here’s five things to do in and around Lake Highlands this weekend.
Go for Gold at the Audelia Road Branch Library
10045 Audelia Road| Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday
As previously covered by our own Carol Toler, the Audelia Road Branch Library is hosting an Olympic kickoff bash this Saturday, free of charge. There will be fencing and taekwondo demonstrations, along with games and crafts.
Enjoy a picnic at one of the area parks
With temperatures expected to remain below 90 degrees for most of the weekend, this may be neighbors’ last chance to enjoy the outdoors for a while. So, why not grab some sandwiches, cold drinks and a blanket and enjoy the local scenery? From White Rock Lake to Flag Pole Hill, the area has plenty of great spots.
Grab a taco from Mario Bros.
8420 Abrams Road Suite 206
Offering authentic, Monterrey-style eats in a fast and casual environment, Mario Bros has some of the best tacos around. Specializing in trompo pork, also known as el pastor, you can easily feed two people for under $20. We recommend the campechano tacos, a combination of trompo pork and bistec.
Watch James McMurty perform at the Granada Theater
3524 Greenville Ave | Doors open 7 p.m. Friday.
Tonight, James McMurty will bring his signature Americana sound to the Granada Theater, with standing room tickets going for $22. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show scheduled to start an hour later.
Watch Olympic action at a local bar
With the Summer Olympics officially underway in Paris, there’s no need to buy a plane ticket to get in on the action. Local bars like Lochland’s, Underdog Sports Club and Restaraunt, and Jake’s Gameday have ample amounts of TVs and cold beverages to enjoy the games with.
