The Lake Highlands tennis team opened up the regular season with an all-varsity tournament in Frisco last weekend. Their victory over Naaman Forest (10-5) in the second match was redemption for last year, as Naaman had beaten them and was a seed higher in regionals.
The win, though, came after a gut-wrenching loss to Frisco Centennial. This match went all the way to the 19-game limit where Centennial went on to win 10-9.
Because a few teams dropped out of the tournament, an impromptu team was created called the Frisco All-Stars, a combination of players from Frisco schools. They were Lake Highlands’ third match and second victory. LH showed its dominance as it cruised to an 18-1 victory over a team consisting mostly of JV players.
LH went up against Frisco Wakeland in its final match of the weekend. This was another match that went down to the wire. Once again LH came up on the short end and lost by a count of 11-8.
Coach Bob Williams is satisfied with his team’s performance and feels like they are ready for long season ahead of them.
“[It was an] absolutely great tournament for us because we are much more prepared for this season than last,” Williams said. “Everyone is in much better shape, as well.”
