There’s a digital clock over the entrance to the Lake Highlands football locker room counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the season opener against Mesquite. That clock will soon run out as the season begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pizza Hut Park.

LH coach Scott Smith liked what he saw in Friday’s scrimmage against South Garland, but warned it will be a different game when the lights go on in Frisco.

"Going into it, we thought we would see some good things and some things we need to work on. The good things were glaring, things we knew we would be good at, and the youth issues were evident," Smith said.

"On the other side of youthfulness is the intensity and the effort that was there and it was a huge positive. The excitement and intensity was the same as it was [at the end of last season] against Klein Oak."

Smith said any defensive lapses against South Garland can be taken with a grain of salt.

"A lot of it was what they [South Garland] were doing offensively," Smith said. "We didn’t spend much time preparing for them. We’re not worried about them. We’re worried about getting lined up for Mesquite and Mesquite’s offense is totally different from what we saw.

Smith explained that South Garland runs a balanced, pro-style attack while Mesquite runs a one-back, spread offense.
