This year’s scrimmage between Lake Highlands and South Garland ended on a more peaceful note than last year’s, but there were still many helmet-rattling hits delivered by both teams.

Lake Highlands scored three touchdowns to South Garland’s one. Both teams scored on their opening possessions, but the Wildcats needed only seven plays to get into the end zone as opposed to the 13 needed by South Garland.

The Wildcats’ first team offense was able to move the ball up and down the field with efficiency, especially with the option and quick wide receiver screens. Quarterback Ricky Zorn looked sharp as he threw for two touchdowns and was also sack-free for the entire scrimmage.

Defensively, though, the Wildcats had issues stopping the run. The Colonels were able to gain yards up the middle, off tackle and on sweeps. South Garland’s sole touchdown came off a play-action pass from inside the five yard line.

The LH defense did have its bright moments. The Wildcats were able to shut out the Colonels for an entire offensive series, which consisted of 15 plays (each team got a maximum of 15 plays per series). Also, the play of cornerback David Green was worth noting, as he showed off his quickness while keeping the Colonels’ best wide-out at bay.

One of the scrimmage’s highlights came during the special teams portion when LH kicker Jason Dann showed his strong leg.

Both of Dann’s kickoffs were for touchbacks and his punt netted around 30 yards. The Colonels’ punt went for about 10 yards and their field goal attempt hit an LH player in the stomach as he jumped to block it.
