Happy 1993 from all of us at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas. We had a record number of adoptions for 1992, and we thank you for your continued support of our organization.

We took in more than 14,000 animals last year, and our adoptions increased by nearly 50 percent. That’s the good news.

About 600,000 animals are euthanized annually in Texas by animal control shelters and humane agencies – that’s 286 animals per hour. At an average cost of $33.83 per animal, it costs Texans more than $20 million a year.

In the Dallas area, 200,000 cats and dogs are euthanized each year. Of this amount, 33,000 are euthanized by the City of Dallas Animal Control – at a cost to Dallas taxpayers of $1.5 million per year.

Folks, we have a real problem with irresponsible pet owners who do not have their pets altered. Puppy mills and flea market profiteers need to be regulated, and indiscriminate breeding must be stopped.

If you still don’t get the picture on how serious this situation is, consider this: In six years, one female dog and her litter can produce 67,000 puppies! And one female cat and her litter can produce 420,000 kittens! (This is not a misprint.)

Please don’t add to this litter problem. If you have a pet that isn’t altered, please make it your New Year’s resolution to do so. And, until there are none, adopt one.
