Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have sacrificed for country and fellow American, and, of course, it means a well-deserved day off for some of you who don’t save lives or write news stories for a living.
Lake Highlands launches Memorial Day with its annual Art and Play Festival and 5k race, 1k fun run and Kids’ Bike Adventure, all to benefit Camp Sweeney, for kiddos with diabetes. It all happens at the Lake Highlands Town Center, Skillman at Walnut Hill from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Featuring food trucks, bounce houses and art vendors. Admission and parking are free, and $10 buys games and crafts.
Later Memorial Day, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra this year brings back its outdoor free Memorial Day concert at Flag Pole Hill. Presented by Bank of America, the concert and fireworks show starts at 8 p.m. Bring the family, a blanket or chairs to sit on, and mosquito repellent.
The Pocket Sandwich Theater showcases “Moon Over Buffalo,” a fun Hollywood farce about George and Charlotte Hay, a married couple in the 1950s. Both are wannabe actors, hoping to impress director Frank Capra in this comedic farce. The show continues through June 18. Showtimes and ticket prices vary, so get all the details here.
Nature meets art in the current exhibition hosted by White Rock Lake Museum at the Bath House Cultural Center, running through Oct. 1. “Natural Impressions: Recent Artwork by Cecilia Thurman” offers a collection of paintings by this Dallas-area artist whose work has been displayed all over the world.
Did you ever want to raise backyard chickens but didn’t know what it involved? John and Emily Ramos of Urban Chicken Inc. will be discussing all the details of raising chickens on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at Northaven Gardens, not far from Lake Highlands. The poultry experts will discuss the basics, answer questions and have pullets available for sale. There is no charge to attend the class, but registration is required (and available here).
The NorthPark Center gets spicy this Saturday with a dance demonstration from Luis Delgadillo of Salsa Dallas. It takes place at 3 p.m. in the NorthCourt between Nordstroms and Macy’s.
