The Lake Highlands volleyball team showed an ability to adjust in its first scrimmages last weekend. After a so-so performance in Friday’s scrimmages at McKinney Boyd, the Wildcats worked on improving their block for a half-hour Saturday morning and showed much improvement later that day in scrimmages at Pearce.
"Saturday morning we went out and had three times as many blocks," coach Melissa Christman said. "They’re just coachable. They want to get better and they want to get better as a team. They really focus on what I ask them to do and they produce."
Christman was particually impressed with the work of setter Rachel Peters.
"Rachel did a good job the entire time," Christman said. "She was running the offense and it really started to click toward the end."
Christman also credited libero Christian Flanagan with being able to make adjustments on the fly.
"If she sees something happening on the court and we need to make a change, she can talk to me and we can make that change right away," Christman said. "She’s started taking charge on the court. I was really excited about that. She made some really good decisions out there that saved us some points."

In Friday’s scrimmages, Christman said LH started slowly and lost to McKinney Boyd, split with Sachse and lost the finale to Bishop Lynch.
On Saturday, LH lost to Pearce but came back to beat Lynch and Arlington Lamar.
LH officially opens the season Tuesday against three of the area’s top Class 4A programs in Highland Park, Red Oak and Pearce. Matches begin at 5 p.m. at Highland Park.
