Lake Highlands Women’s League volunteers presented college scholarships Friday to 53 graduating seniors — the most ever in the organization’s 57-year history. The funds were raised at their annual Holiday in the Highlands home tour, a neighborhood tradition since 1978.
“We had 146 applications, and we interviewed 65 students,” said Scholarship Chairman Alyssa Ramsey, praising the caliber of applicants and their long lists of achievements. “The students were so impressive and articulate, poised and driven, and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and learn more about their lives.”
The scholarships were granted in addition to $60,000 given earlier this month to community nonprofits and local schools. The league’s ability to consistently do good work in the community is the result of faithful backing by donors, tour attendees and homeowners.
“The LHWL scholarship presentation represents the heart of our mission as a league,” said President Dee Ann Baggett. “It brings together the time, generosity and dedication of our members to directly support LH seniors. It reflects the powerful impact our volunteers and sponsors make, from hours of service to the funds raised and invested back into our community. Most importantly, it is a celebration of the achievements of these outstanding seniors and our shared commitment to their future success.”
