UT Dallas is hosting a summer entrepreneurship camp for students who just completed their sophomore, junior or senior years in high school, and they’re actively recruiting LH kids to participate.
The Innovation Opportunity Summer Camp is a two-week non-residential camp taught by UT Dallas faculty, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and private equity investors. Students will work in groups of five, facilitated by UTD graduate students or current high school teachers. They’ll make new friends, learn the basics of entrepreneurship, interact with UTD college faculty and enhance their resumes for college apps and scholarship searches. Lessons will include development of presentation skills, a computer business simulation game, tours of university laboratories and visits to area businesses to experience innovation in action. The camp will culminate with the development of a progressive business plan for a new business based on their original ideas. Last year’s camp hosted 23 students and included lessons and practice on perfecting an “elevator speech.” Since funding is essential to the startup of most businesses and since most investors aren’t keen on long-winded presentations, the students are trained to perfect a sales pitch that will get investors interested within the span of a one-minute elevator ride.
The camp will be held June 21 through July 2, 2010 at the School of Management on the UT Dallas campus, 800 W. Campbell Road in Richardson. The application deadline has passed but spots are still available.
