Saturday’s shredding services are free.

The Lake Highlands Public Improvement District is teaming up with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department and the Dallas Police Department to host a free shredding event this weekend. Neighbors may deliver up to two file boxfuls of documents to be professionally destroyed free of charge.

Experts suggest shredding documents to protect sensitive personal information, prevent identity theft, avoid data breaches and maintain an organized and secure environment. Neighbors are invited to bring old billing statements, bank statements, canceled checks, medical records, resumes, photos, junk mail, magazines and travel documents. It’s not necessary to remove staples, paper clips, metal strips from hanging files, manilla folders, paper board legal binders, spiral notebooks or think plastic sheet protectors.

Prohibited items include ring binders, cardboard, books, plastic, x-rays, batteries, combustible items, cell phones, key fobs, remote controls, electronics, cables, computers, syringes, glass, cans, cardboard tubes, ink and toner cartridges, nuts and bolts, soiled or oily paper, trash or food.

The Safe Shred event will run from 11 to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Lake Highlands North Recreation Center, 9940 White Rock Trail. Participants may drive through and drop off their items on the Church Road side of the building.
