The weather is finally cooling down, so there are plenty of reasons to get out of the house and venture into the neighborhood this weekend. The Lake Highlands High School football team is hosting a first-round playoff matchup at The Boneyard, and a beloved tradition recently returned to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
So, here’s five things to do in and around Lake Highlands this weekend.
Support the Wildcats as they take on South Grand Prairie
Wildcat-Ram Stadium | 9449 Church Rd | Kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday
The Wildcats beat South Grand Prairie in last year’s bi-district championship round in a close game that finished 42-38, setting up a rematch for the LHHS squad under second-year Head Coach Cory Campbell. LHHS is coming off a strong season that saw the team go undefeated in district play, finishing as UIL District 7-6A and RISD champions.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. tonight at Wildcat-Ram Stadium. Tickets can be purchased here, and information on RISD’s clear bag policy can be found here.
Watch Toki, the “Japanese Elvis,” perform at Vector Brewing
Vector Brewing | 9850 Walnut Hill Ln #405 | Sunday at 5, 6 and 7 p.m.
Toyokazu Toki, who has played tribute to The King at Vector Brewing before, will return to the neighborhood to recreate some of Elvis’ iconic hits. The impersonator has previously appeared in Elvis impersonator contests nationwide, notably winning first place in the Ultimate Tribute Artist Contest at the 2023 Branson Elvis Festival. He will perform three sets at 5, 6 and 7 p.m, and will be available for pictures afterwards.
Take in new seasonal displays at the Arboretum.
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden | 8525 Garland Rd
Holiday at the Arboretum returned earlier this week with a special opening ceremony accompanied by caroling and Santa appearances. The garden’s traditional 12 Days of Christmas gazebos, created by Dallas Opera designer Tommy Bourgeois, have returned for their tenth year. The DeGolyer House has been decorated to embody the work of famed Italian sculptor Luca Della Robbia, and Santa Claus might just be available at the Pauline and Austin Neuhoff Christmas Village (check here for St. Nick’s availability).
The Arboretum has also scheduled assorted entertainment for the seasonal program, which runs until January 5. A schedule of performances can be found here.
Check out the Kids’ Health and Safety Fair at the High School
Lake Highlands High School | 9449 Church Rd. | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m Saturday
Neighborhood Police Officers (NPOs) of the Dallas Police Department are hosting a health and safety fair this Saturday at Lake Highlands High School. There will be train rides, face painting, a fire truck, cotton candy, free In-N-Out Burger, cotton candy, popcorn and balloon art. Families will also have access to dental screenings, flu shots, medicaid information and more. The event is free to attend.
Try one of Resident Taqueira’s top-rated tacos
Resident Taqueira | 9661 Audelia Rd. #112
Andrew Savoie’s Resident Taqueria was recently named a top 50 taco in Texas by Texas Monthly Taco Editor Jose Ralat. If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, the taco shop is open on Friday and Saturday serving staples like the caramelized cauliflower taco, which comes with pepita, kale and lemon epazote aioli. Current specials include a lengua pastrami taco and a sweet potato taco served with kale, pickled red onion, pepita, cotija cheese and salsa macha.
