This summer, minors under 18 can receive free lunches from 12 Dallas Public Library branches through Aug. 11.
In partnership with the nonprofit Education Potential Verified, an organization fighting childhood hunger, the program will provide Dallas youth with a reliable source of nutrition in the absence of meals provided during the school year. Last summer, 4,455 lunches were served.
While all locations will offer lunch, some will offer breakfast or an afternoon snack. There is no requirement for proof of need or pre-registration.
While assisting in-need children is one of the program’s main goals, it also seeks to boost engagement in DPL summer initiatives such as the SMART Summer reading challenge. The meals themselves are provided by the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.
