Dawson Clemmons could be lounging by the pool or playing video games this summer. Instead, the Richardson High School junior is devoting his time to helping others. Clemmons is coordinating a food drive as part of his effort to become an Eagle Scout with Troop 890.

“Food insecurity is a big obstacle for many of our neighbors,” says Clemmons. “In Dallas County, 27% of children under age 18 live in a household that has experienced food insecurity in the past year.”

Clemmons first became aware of the tremendous need around him while volunteering with Austin Street Shelter. He also rolled up his sleeves to join fellow members of his church, Ridgewood Park United Methodist, create and distribute blessing bags for the homeless.

“I have seen firsthand how so many people are affected by this issue,” adds Clemmons. “In considering Eagle projects, I felt through coordinating a large-scale food drive, I would be able to have an immediate and necessary impact on our own neighbors’ needs.”

To become an Eagle Scout, candidates must climb seven scouting ranks, earn 21 merit badges and complete a service project, among other requirements. Their projects are intended to help them make an impact in the community while they recruit and coordinate the support of others.

Clemmons is partnering with Ridgewood Park UMC’s Feed5000 ministry, which seeks to feed 5000 people every year via food drives, lunch sacks and other efforts, and with the Wilkinson Center, which hosts a free food pantry for Dallas families in need. Items most needed include canned meats, canned pasta, boxed cereal, Hamburger Helper, canned soups, cake mixes, cooking oil, pancake mix, syrup, jelly and other nonperishables. Personal hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors, diapers and wipes are also requested. Laundry and dish detergent are also needed, along with basic cleaning supplies.

His goal is to collect 3,000 pounds of food. That’s enough to feed 2,500 people.

Clemmons will host a food drop off July 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at RPUMC, 6445 East Lovers Lane, and his fellow scouts will leave food donation bags on neighbors’ doorsteps for later pickup. Monetary donations will also be accepted for the purchase of food. You may donate online here and put Dawson Clemmons in the notes line.
