Directional signs provided by the White Rock Lake Foundation are expected to be installed at White Rock Lake Park by the end of the month, said board member Susan Falvo.
The 11 graffiti-proof signs will help trail users identify their location and distances between landmarks.
Four signs will be about six feet tall, and the seven others will be smaller.
The White Rock Lake Foundation, established in 1989, has been working on this project since at least 2018.
Renovating Winfrey Point is another of the foundation’s ongoing ventures. In January, the nonprofit presented a $151,000 check to Dallas Park and Recreation, the first in a series of donations to fund the construction. The project is meant to bring the building back to its glory.
Construction on Winfrey Point, a 2,500-square-foot building on the east side of the lake, began in 1941. It was named for Dallas Police Commissioner R. L. “Dick” Winfrey, according to Steven Butler’s From Water Supply to Urban Oasis: A History of White Rock Lake Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps was initially tasked with planning the building, but when the United States entered World War II, the CCC camp was shut down, and the park department was left to finish the work.
Winfrey Point, one of the rentable venues at White Rock Lake Park, was probably also inspiration for a setting included in a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Travis Kelce.
