Kathy Stewart’s road to City Hall has been as smooth as White Rock Lake on Sunday morning. She gathered support from both sides of the political spectrum and all sections of Lake Highlands. She earned 68% of the vote and avoided a costly runoff, despite drawing three challengers in the May election.
Then she hit a snag.
She tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, the same morning she and fellow council members were scheduled to have their official swearing in according to city charter. Accommodating city staffers arranged for her to attend the meeting virtually, but she’ll have to skip Inauguration Day ceremonies this morning at the Meyerson Symphony Center.
“I couldn’t believe it when the COVID test was positive early this morning,” she told me Monday. “I am very disappointed I can’t join my colleagues tomorrow at the Inauguration. But I know the disappointment will pass, and I am excited to start work on D10 and City of Dallas business.”
Mayor Eric L. Johnson, elected in May to a second term, said he anticipates welcoming her around the horseshoe when she’s cleared by doctors.
“It is unfortunate that Councilmember Kathy Stewart cannot participate in what is sure to be a memorable occasion for all in attendance,” Johnson said. “However, I respect immensely her decision to prioritize the health of others above her personal desires. That is true leadership! I extend my heartfelt wishes for her swift recovery and look forward to working with her.”
