The singer / songwriter has toured for 24 years. This new chapter in his life, which he shared he took his wife and kids into consideration when making the decision, will shift more toward church ministry.

“I’ve been so nervous to make this video, but I’m making this post to announce that this summer is my last ever tour,” Smith said in the video. “I have felt a strong desire to pursue ministry. This doesn’t mean I’m going to start a church, but this is a time of learning and growing for me.”
Smith intends to serve his local church under the teaching, council and leadership of his pastor and elders while he continues work on a master’s degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary along with public speaking and authorship.
His memoir details his and his family’s experience learning to live after loss. In 2019, he lost his son, River, to a drowning accident.
“Learning to live after loss is not a simple or straightforward process, but I’m here to help you discover that it is possible,” writes Smith in the book’s opening chapter. “This is a book about that process. It’s about learning to live after loss, which actually comes to all of us at some point in life—one way or another.”
Most recently, Smith made his film debut in the Christmas film Moonrise. In an interview with Advocate in our March issue, Smith shared what it was like testing the waters of acting and channeling loss through a character.
The Like a River tour will begin Apr. 13 and run through Aug 26. The memoir will be available Aug. 1.
