The Dallas City Council is currently examining the effects of short-term rentals on the city’s economy and on the neighbors who live near STR units. Council members spent more than seven hours Tuesday hearing testimony and debating whether STRs, such as Airbnb and Vrbo, should be greenlighted without restriction, regulated in residential areas or banned outright. Now they want to hear directly from residents throughout Dallas.

The city is distributing an online STR survey, and they want to know which issues are most concerning for neighbors. Questions include resident preferences on permit fees, occupancy limits, parking restrictions, noise regulations, outdoor event restrictions and the city’s ability to terminate operators’ license for multiple citations.

The survey also includes samples of potential ordinances modeled after other American cities, including one from Arlington, where STRs are allowed in entertainment districts, multifamily neighborhoods and commercial districts; Atlanta, where locals are limited to 2 STRs and nonresidents are blocked from STR ownership; Denver, where STR operators must live on the property and Houston, where STR zoning is unregulated.
