The Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League is rounding the corner on 15 years of community engagement.
The league was first imagined by two young women who were raised in Lake Highlands and felt that the neighborhood needed a group that capitalized on the energy and talents of the young women there, representatives with LHJWL shared.
In 2004 six young women, all of which graduated from Lake Highlands High School from 1989-1997, formed a steering committee. That fall they held their first general meeting along with 85 charter members.
The goal of the organization was to help young women establish roots and relationships in Lake Highlands, while creating a positive impact on the neighborhood.
With that goal in mind, LHJWL hosted its first annual Run the Highlands 5K and 1 mile family walk in the spring of 2005. The group also hosts an annual Light Up the Highlands community event over the holidays and has raised more than $850,000 for Lake Highlands in the last few decades.
Since founding members Lynn Davenport, Sarah Graham, Sarah Hefton, Amy Moore, Meredith Mosley and Cary Woodall started LHJWL in 2004, the group has grown to up to 125 members. Take a look at their smiling faces below.
LHJWL is the junior group of the Lake Highlands Women’s League, which was founded in 1969 to support local non-profit agencies and graduating Lake Highlands High School seniors though volunteers and grants.
