The bowl of spaghetti that is the intersection of Skillman-Audelia-LBJ is going to get even more complicated, beginning this weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is working to realign the intersection as part of their 635 East Project, and significant traffic shifts will begin Friday night.
Over the weekend, various lanes of Skillman north and south of 635 and various lanes of Audelia from Royal to Skillman will be closed for construction crews. The work will eventually result in a crisper, cleaner and less dangerous intersection and will finally tie in with the planned Skillman Gateway Bridge over 635. All lanes of westbound 635 will also be closed at Royal Friday and Saturday evening as crews perform a partial demolition of the Royal Lane overpass bridge. Only one eastbound lane will get through.
The 11-mile 635 East Project, already well-underway, involves reconstruction and widening of I-635 from US 75 to I-30. When complete, there will be 5 general purpose lanes and one managed toll lane on either side. Sound walls, continuous frontage roads and intersection improvements are also in the works.
