Richardson City Councilmember Steve Mitchell announced today he has withdrawn from the Richardson ISD school board election. The father of five cited recent career and family changes.
“I was looking forward to an exciting Place 7 race, and I am grateful for the overwhelming support that I had received in Lake Highlands, North Dallas, and Richardson for this run,” shared Mitchell. “However, over the last week, work responsibilities for both Karen and I have changed, along with care responsibilities for an elderly out of state relative.”
Mitchell referenced efforts by his wife, who works as a nurse and is helping to staff a COVID-19 vaccination center.
“[I’m] trying to get as many people vaccinated as possible, so my days are very long,” Karen said. “This was simply something neither Steve nor I anticipated when he entered the race.”
Mitchell said his passion for RISD will remain unchanged, even if his name is not on the ballot.
“Once my 16 years of city council service ends in May, I will continue on with service to both my community and to the broader RISD community by advocating for the district, it’s teachers, and it’s kids.”
Since Mitchell announced his candidacy, three more hopefuls have filed to run for the at large seat: Chris Poteet, Amanda Clair and Eric Stengel. Mitchell has not made an endorsement in the race, but said he’ll follow it closely to determine who earns his vote May 1.
