“We have put together opportunities to serve, educate and engage your whole family, at home or safely outside, not just on that day,” said Lowry Manders, the group’s admin.

Here are the events LHAMAR is hosting for MLK Day along with some supplemental readings, videos and exercises suggested by the group:

Serve

  • Join LHAMAR to deliver contactless “Meals on Wheels” on Jan. 18. The group will deliver meals for 30 routes in Dallas. Participants can pick up at two locations between 9:30-10:30 a.m. To sign up and get more information, visit this sign up link.

Educate and Engage

  • Watch videos from LHAMAR’s MLK Day Playlist on their YouTube channel. The videos include stories for children and some of Dr. King’s famous speeches.
  • This Sunday, Jan. 17, LHAMAR will host a “What Would Dr. King Do? Lessons for These Times” discussion beginning at 7 p.m. The free and public discussion will be led by community leaders. Email admin@lakehighlandsareamomsagainstracism.org for the event’s Zoom link.
  • Visit LHAMAR’s Antiracism 101 Unit on their website.
  • Memorize a favorite Dr. King quote, put it up in your home and share it with your family. Here’s some inspiration.
  • Read A Knock at Midnight or Letter from a Birmingham Jail. For children and teens, LHAMAR suggests this list of children’s books about MLK.
  • Listen to podcast It Was Said Ep. 1, “MLK Jr, The Last Speech,” which contains historical commentary.
  • Tune into the free “Poor People’s Campaign” King Lecture on Jan. 28 beginning at 5 p.m.
