LHWL members present a check to Youth Believing in Change in 2019
The Lake Highlands Women’s League is distributing $100,000 to schools and nonprofits in the community this month, with special emphasis on groups providing COVID-19 relief. Organizations assisting with food, rent, utilities, home essentials and medications were given top priority and larger grants, said Disbursements Chair Carolyn Brunkenhoefer.
“It has been heartwarming to hear how all of the organizations are working together to get through the crisis,” Brunkenhoefer said. “They are not waiting to hear of people who are in need. They are actively seeking them out.”
Recipients of grants totaling $50,000 include Dallas Police Youth Foundation, Feed Lake Highlands, Forerunner Mentoring, Gateway of Grace, Imagine Dallas, Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League, Lake Highlands North Recreation Center, Lake Highlands Family YMCA, Network of Community Ministries, The Warren Center and Youth Believing in Change. Another $50,000 will go out to LH-area schools after they re-assess their needs in the climate of the coronavirus.
“Jill Goad of Feed Lake Highlands is working with Café Momentum and contacting the apartment complexes to help identify elderly or people with no school children that may also need food,” explained Brunkenhoefer. “Vince Gaddis at Youth Believing in Change is distributing meats and produce that would have been discarded by restaurants. Network of Community Ministries and Gateway of Grace is providing transportation for people unable to pick up food and medicines. Pamper Lake Highlands is providing weekly essentials for young mothers.”
Earlier this month, LHWL announced that it will award $99,000 in college scholarships to 39 graduating seniors from Lake Highlands High School. The proceeds were earned at the league’s annual fundraiser, it’s Holiday in the Highlands home tour.
“The LHWL is also partnering with the LH PID and Imagine Dallas to help feed our heroes in the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire-Rescue and COVID, ICU and ER at Texas Health Resources, utilizing our LH restaurants,” added Brunkenhoefer.
