Candy Barr, the 1950s stripper who was close to Jack Ruby, pardoned by Gov. John Connally and bridesmaid in one of Sammy Davis, Jr.’s weddings will be the subject of An Evening with Skip Hollandsworth benefitting DME Exchange of Dallas this month.
Hollandsworth, award-winning executive editor of Texas Monthly, has worked as a newspaper reporter, television producer and documentary filmmaker. The 2011 movie Bernie, which he co-wrote with Richard Linklater, is based on his 1998 story, “Midnight in the Garden of East Texas.”
DME Exchange, led by executive director and Lake Highlands neighbor Betty Hersey, collects, refurbishes, sanitizes and distributes used durable medical equipment (DME) such as wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to residents of Dallas County who cannot afford to purchase or rent it.
An Evening with Skip Hollandsworth will be held Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Sevy’s Grill, 8201 Preston Road, and includes hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer. Tickets are $100 per couple and available online here.
