Dog Day Afternoon is Aug. 26 at the Lake Highlands North pool

Construction has begun on the city’s new Lake Highlands Neighborhood Family Aquatic Center, set to open across from Lake Highlands High School in May 2019. And the scene has created nostalgia in LHers who’ve been swimming there since they were knee high to a bullfrog. The pool, called Skyline back in the day, was later renamed Lake Highlands North and will soon be removed.

On its final day, the pool will host Dog Day Afternoon, and residents are invited to bring their four-legged friends to enjoy some fun in the sun. There will be a doggie swimsuit competition, a distance “splash” contest and other games and prizes. Entrance is $5 for dogs (people are free), but you’ll need proof of your pooch’s current rabies vaccination and city registration.

Dog Day Afternoon is Sunday, Aug. 26 from 2-5 p.m.

You can read Christina Hughes’ deep dive story about how Dallas is moving from the segregated pools of the past to today’s fancy aquatic centers here. But here’s a warning: when the new swim center opens, you’ll be admitted wearing anything but cotton.
