We wrote last week about a possible new elementary school called Blackland Prairie Conservatory & Atelier.

We now know said school plans to plant and grow here in Lake Highlands, at 9949 McCree, and that the founders will host an open house this weekend, Sunday Dec. 13 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the school.

The open house will provide an opportunity to learn more about the school’s mission, philosophy and strategic plans, organizers say.

Visitors will tour the campus and meet members of the advisory board as well as co-founder, Dr. Tiffany Lipsett (with whom we hope to chat soon). The invitation asks that attendees leave the children at home, by the way.

Blackland Prairie will serve kindergarteners ages 4- 61/2-years old this year. They aim to add a grade each academic year. RSVP for the event at

According to documents posted by Blackland Prairie, the school’s mission is “to encourage living (play)fully, (mind)fully and (art)fully.”

“We create an environment that cultivates global citizens, earth stewards, and builds community friendships. We specialize in “right on time” learning, emphasizing the slow rhythms of childhood and fostering a love of lifelong learning.”

The school is “Steiner inspired” (if you need to learn what that means, you can learn more here).

Enrollment begins February 2016 for the 2016-2017 academic year. We do not yet know the tuition, but you can assume it will be discussed if you attend the open house. (Or we will let you know when we know).
