With its glittering disco balls and funky tunes, the White Rock Skate Center offers a modern day taste of the 1970s, and it’s a draw for families across Lake Highlands. If owner Chuck Connor had a nickel for every child’s birthday party that took place at the skating rink, he’d be a rich man by now.

So it’s no surprise that Advocate readers voted White Rock Skate Center as the best place to bring kids in Lake Highlands (see other winners here). It’s hard for anyone not to feel like a kid when they slap on a pair of wheels and head to the center of the rink for the “Hokey Pokey.” Keeping that retro vibe is good for nostalgia and business, Connor told the Advocate in a 2012 interview. Patrons love rolling in and finding exactly what they remember as a kid.

Then there is the famed money machine, where dollar bills whip around in a frenzied gust of wind as excited kids (and adults) try to capture the cash.

The roller rink is open Thursday through Sunday during the summer, and Friday through Sunday during the school year. Find out more at the website.
