We reported earlier in the week the detail-slim murder of Ricky Griffin inside a Lake Highlands-area apartment. Police fairly quickly charged 25-year-old Kieron Alexander with Griffin’s murder. Alexander told police during an interrogation that he snapped and beat Griffin after, he says, Griffin made unwanted sexual advances toward Alexander. Later, the Advocate magazine (the national Advocate, that is, whose audience is the LGBT community), reported that the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs has issued a strong statement denouncing what it called ‘the hate violence motivated homicide of Ricky Griffin’ …”

2. Snakes!

I saw one the other day — a long grey fella squiggling frantically across Shoreview not far from Flag Pole Hill. Turtles, frogs and lizards, too — we’ve all likely seen an extraordinary number of them. It’s due, if you believe resident wildlife expert Bonnie Bradshaw (whom we have interviewed numerous times for Advocate stories) who is quoted in this DMN article, to recent rainfall, which has been heavier than usual. The piece is not for the squeamish, as is recounts the story of one White Rock Area resident who encountered a snake inside her home.

3. Serendipity in Lake Highlands

One Dallas Morning News writer offers a behind-the-scenes look at how a story about Lake Highlands Dutch Art Gallery led to a fascinating meeting with a decorated war veteran. Lake Highlands resident Dennis King, who died recently at 90, “served in the storied 7th Armoured Division, known as the Desert Rats. He was also among the British soldiers who landed on Gold Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944
