Officer Burns was on duty and responding to a complaint when he reportedly encountered the suspect who shot the uniformed officer “multiple times.” Officer Burns and Officer Salvador Varillas returned fire on the suspect before Burns was transported to Baylor hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Then a search for the subject ensued, but didn’t last long.

At about 6 p.m. Perkins, accompanied by his mother, turned himself in to Dallas homicide detectives. The suspect also was injured in the shootout, said Assistant Chief Randall Blankenbaker in a press conference. Perkins was taken into custody and transported to the hospital.

“This charge is a First Degree Felony,” Blankenbaker says. “In addition to the criminal charges against Perkins, the department will follow its standard investigative protocol that is conducted for all police involved shootings.”
