Kathy Stewart and Anita Siegers, Lake Highlands residents and owners of neighborhood institution Highlands Cafe, have announced, via Facebook, plans to sell their restaurant on Jan. 31.
Stewart and Siegers say that the cafe will remain open with the same menu, staff and hours.
“We opened the cafe nearly 10 years ago to improve the shopping center and this intersection and feel that goal has more than been accomplished,” the announcement states.
Siegers and Stewart were among 20 financial backers who opened the restaurant believing that the neighborhood needed a casual family dining spot. Since the cafe opened in 2004, Advocate has covered tales from the regulars, Highland Cafe’s tastiest menu items, and even commentary from the owners regarding retail development in the neighborhood.
I called Highlands Cafe to learn a little bit more about the new owners. An employee told me that they are unsure if the new owners will change the name of the cafe. She also assured me that Siegers or Stewart would call me back, but that they aren’t able to reveal any details before Feb. 1. In the meantime, enjoy a $5 “farewell burger special” at the cafe through Jan. 31.
