Despite high rates of low-income families and other challenges, Richardson ISD is receiving some good buzz following recent release of accountability ratings.
KERA talked to superintendent Kay Waggoner, students, parents and teachers about the district’s success. The willingness to innovate seems to play a large role in RISD’s good grades.

A case of West Nile Virus was reported in Oak Cliff this week, but a piece in the Morning News notes that “Northeast Dallas County appears to have more infected pools than in other areas.” That’s pretty close to home. Dr. Christopher Perkins, the county’s medical director, advised residents, via the News, to protect themselves.
“The first line of defense to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid getting bitten in the first place,” he said. Such measures also include removing outdoor standing water, where mosquitoes can breed. Windows and doors also should be mosquito-proofed to keep the insects out of the house. Our neighborhood’s Gecko Hardware in Northlake shopping Center (Northwest and Ferndale) sells eco-friendly mosquito repellent.

J.C. Penney is working hard to stay relevant and profitable. The Dallas Business Journal reports that the company is making some moves to prevent a possible takeover “while they are trying to fix it.” The Lake Highlands-area J.C. Penney is located on Skillman at Northwest Highway.
