Most summers, Mary Kellagher can be found lounging by the pool, sipping a Sonic iced tea and reading a good book. This year, she’s a busy bee. She’s preparing to make a move from LH’s Skyview Elementary, where she served as assistant principal for the last year, to Northlake, where she was just tapped for the head gig. Kellagher began her 17 years in RISD as a teacher at Stults Road, and she later served as assistant principal at Thurgood Marshall Elementary.
“This is so exciting,” Kellagher told me. “I’m really happy to be at Northlake and am ready to get the year started.”
I asked Kellagher if she knew about the “Let’s Back Northlake!” initiative, and she was ready to continue the challenge of revitalizing the neighborhood school.
“I never underestimate the power of getting to know people and building relationships. Being new to Northlake, this will be my first priority. I know we all have the same goal – we want Northlake to be a wonderful place for all students. I’m looking forward to working with the Northlake community and making Northlake the best it can be. Go Wildcats!”

I have one daughter, Katie. She just graduated from UNT with her master’s degree in speech pathology.
What is your favorite after-school treat?
I love a Sonic ice tea or cranberry limeade. I also like popcorn and any fresh fruit.
Did you ever get sent to the principal’s office as a kid?
I only went once in the 8th grade and I was scared to death. I had no idea why I was asked to go…when the principal dialed my phone number and began talking to my dad, I found out it was for a positive reason. I was never so relieved in all my life!
Favorite childhood book?
Any Dr. Seuss books and the Laura Ingall’s Wilder series.
Favorite LH hangout?
I love Tony’s and Highlands Café. My new favorite hangout will be Northlake Elementary!
I like to bake and travel. I aspire to garden, but I’m not successful with anything I plant!
Name 3 things you’ll be certain to move from your desk/office at Skyview to Northlake.
My post-it notes, planner and pictures.
Tell us something no one knows about you.
If I weren’t in education, I would be a meteorologist. I always have an eye in the sky and love watching the weather forecast, especially when a storm of any kind is moving in.
Welcome, Ms. Kellagher!
