Pride can express itself in the form of a bumper sticker, as District 10 councilman Jerry Allen is hoping to prove.
In an effort to get school pride to “stick,” Allen, who represents Lake Highlands, asked elementary schools that did not have car decals to submit designs, which he had printed and distributed to six schools: Aikin Elementary, Audelia Creek Elementary, Forest Lane Academy, Northlake Elementary, Skyview Elementary and Thurgood Marshall Elementary. Each of these schools, more than 80 percent of whose students were on free or reduced lunch as of 2010, was given 1,000 decals that were then given to parents and educators free of charge.
Printing the decals for these schools gives students and parents another way to “take ownership of their communities” and acknowledge local educators for “making our community a better place to live,” Allen says.
Keep an eye out around the neighborhood and you might see wildcats, stallions, bulldogs and more staring at you from the cars of proud families and educators.
