LH grad starts baking business

Lake Highlands High School 2004 alumna Christie Berry McCabe has launched a new business called Daily Dose of Sweet. McCabe learned to bake at home with her mom, Barbara, and her three sisters, all Lake Highlands grads (Katie, 2000; Natalie, 2006; and Martie, 2012). “When we were little, we would go to my grandma’s house before Thanksgiving, and all the girls would bake the desserts,” McCabe says. “Then, when I went to college [she, like the rest of the Berry girls, are proud Baylor Bears], I started baking on my own for friends and roommates. When I graduated, I discovered the world of baking blogs, and I was hooked. Since then, I haven’t stopped baking and testing out my own recipes.” McCabe is starting small, offering birthday cakes and party treats made after school and on weekends for friends and folks who hear by word of mouth. She also bakes cupcakes and wedding sweets, and says her favorite things to bake, and her best sellers, are her decorated sugar cookies. McCabe is married to LHHS 2005 grad Taylor McCabe, and he takes the photos for her baking blog.

Janie Christy merges with Dallas Ballet Center

Janie Christy of Lake Highlands’ Janie Christy School of Dance is joining the staff at Dallas Ballet Center. The center will merge the classes, schedule and students from Christy’s studio with its own starting this fall. “When faced with the decision to renew my lease at 9090 Skillman, I decided to focus on finding more time for family, and relinquish the responsibilities of studio ownership,” Christy says, adding that joining the Dallas Ballet Center staff allows her to “continue my 19-year tradition of sharing my love of dance with children.”
