As the school year winds down and students are deciding classes to sign up for next year, one Lake Highlands mom is actively recruiting for the White Rock Juniors Crew Team. “Rowers can earn high school PE credit,” said Monette Irwin, whose daughter, Alex, rows with the group. The crew team is composed of teens from all over the metroplex, but they train and compete at nearby White Rock Lake.
A regatta will be held at the lake May 28 from 8:30 am to 2 pm, and National Learn to Row Day is June 4 from 10 am to 1 pm. Both events are free and open to the public and will give interested parties a chance to see rowing in action.
Summer Learn-to-Row Camps will be offered by the White Rock Juniors for 7th grade and up summer mornings all summer long. The cost is $75 per student for a week-long camp, but need-based scholarships are available. More information is available here. You can also make arrangements to observe a team workout by emailing Monette here.
If your child falls in love with the sport, college participation and scholarship opportunities abound. “Alex has found a sport she is passionate about, she is getting into great shape and she is having fun,” gushed proud mom Monette. “And,” she added, “it is so beautiful to watch those boats glide across the water.”
