A recent study shows Dallasites can’t read too good. So we thought it would be fun to make a list of all the best books set in Dallas. Problem is, aside from a few true crime novels and a lot of Kennedy assassination recounts, few come to mind.
One of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, on which the HBO series True Blood are based, is called “Living Dead in Dallas”, and there’s “North Dallas Forty”, the semi-autobiographical novel from former Dallas Cowboys wide reciever Peter Gent, which became a movie starring Nick Nolte in 1979.
Fun to read? Yes. High-brow literature? Me no think so.
The true story, “Same Kind of Different as Me” is set in Louisiana and Texas. It’s a comeback story about a man who now works at Union Gospel Mission in Oak Cliff.
“Minding the Store” is Stanley Marcus’s lovely autobiography.
And we found this list of the “best” authors from the Dallas area. What are we missing?
