This is the perfect opportunity for the Wildcats to begin looking ahead to next week. It’s the perfect opportunity for a trap.

Lake Highlands is fresh off a big win against W.T. White. It was the Wildcats second straight District 9-5A win and now they sit atop the district with Skyline (3-2, 2-0) and Jesuit (3-2, 2-0).

Now they head to Sunset who has been less than spectacular this season and seems to have been bitten by the grade bug. By the way, there will be no JV game Thursday night as most of the Bisons JV team will likely be filling holes on the varsity squad as a repercussion of the first six weeks.

The Wildcats will have to get past all of that and focus heavily on making themselves better.

Sunset runs a number of different offenses. Head coach Dennis McAdams typically likes to run the Wing-T dating back to as long as I have known him. But the Bisons also spread it out with four wide receivers and input a little I-formation. They are trying to teach their players football at Sunset and giving them multiple options for success.

Sunset quarterback Raymundo Garcia has only thrown for 124 yards this season with no touchdowns and six interceptions.

But the Bisons do have five players with at least 10 rushes, four with at least 27.

Anthony Herrera tops the list with 70 touches for 283 yards and three touchdowns. He’s complimented by Steven Moreno and Demarcus Wilsonwho have a collective 65 carries for 341 yards and no touchdowns.

There should be a number of opportunities for Wildcats players to earn the Big Stick.

Defensively, Sunset runs a 50 formation with three down linemen and a number of stunts. The players aren’t nearly as big as some of the bodies you may have seen at W.T. White, but they try to utilize speed to get things done.

In the last two district games, the Bisons have given up 719 total yards, 617 on the ground, and 99 points. I would expect Desmond Roland and DeVonte Sunwneghan to have a huge game early on the ground and then Derek Anderson and Elbert Landry to get plenty of reps in later.

Have fun at this game, and don’t forget to join me on the live chat Friday.

Also, if you haven’t seen it you should really check out this sweet interception by Jalen Broussard last week.
