Former Wildcat quarterback Ricky Zorn has been nominated for another award, and this is a biggie – the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame’s High School National Scholar-Athlete Award.
Ricky has been named one of five finalists from the southern region. He and 30 other finalists were chosen from more than 400,000 high school football players nationally. The week of October 4, five young men – one from each region – will be selected for recognition in New York City at the NFF’s Annual Chapter Awards Luncheon in December.
The NFF has given the award to outstanding student athletes since 1991, in an effort to “shine a light on their amazing efforts by providing national recognition to the best of the best in the nation at the high school level,” according to NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. The Scholar-Athlete Award comes with high prestige. Criteria include academic achievement, athletic accomplishments and community involvement.
Ricky is the only player from Texas to make it to the regional level of competition. Two nominees from California are his new classmates at Harvard. You can see a complete list of nominees here.
Speaking of Harvard, Ricky sends word that he’s enjoying life in Boston and digging into his studies. The coach has him playing defensive back instead of the quarterback role we are accustomed to, and a shoulder injury from his first game there continues to nag at him. His parents, Jody and Sandra, split weekends watching Ricky play and visiting his twin sister, Ashley, a freshman at OU. Whether or not Ricky’s name is called on October 4, no doubt his family, and LH, will be proud of his accomplishments.
