The next contender in the new taco trend, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, is expected to open soon at Hillside Village shopping center (*at Abrams and Mockingbird, a mile or two outside of Lake Highlands) in the old Blockbuster space.

I stopped into Fuzzy’s after a morning of thrifting in Arlington last weekend. This place is a far cry from the dive-y taquerias we know and love. But it has a fun atmosphere, and the food is not bad either.

There are nine tacos on the menu, including tempura or grilled fish, garlic shredded beef, chicken and grilled veggie. I tried the shredded pork taco plate ($5.99), which comes with two sides (Mexican rice, fried potatoes, borracho beans, black beans or refried beans).

The first clue that this was not a taqueria came when they asked if I wanted my tacos “soft or crispy”. Call me a taco snob. I prefer a taco with two corn tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro, a spritz of lime juice and a little salsa.

The “baja tacos” at Fuzzy’s are not so simple. They come with lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, yellow shredded cheese and the surprise — feta-and-garlic sauce smeared on the tortilla. Weird. Surprising. But not bad.

Chips and salsa are $1.99, but along with a roll of paper towels, each table holds a bottle of Fuzzy’s signature hot sauce, which I might as well tell you, is called “Butt Burning Hot Sauce”. *Sigh* I can’t believe they made me type that. Despite the grody name, this hot sauce is tasty and not as hot as the name implies. It’s pretty simple — ceyenne pepper mash, vinegar, salt, crushed red peppers, black pepper and other spices. It added just the right heat and acid to my pork tacos.

Fuzzy’s also has a variety of draft beer and margaritas. And the vast menu also includes five salads, seven burritos, two soups, quesadillas and a whole breakfast menu.
