Popular LHHS assistant principal Joe Copeland has been hired away to serve as principal for Dan F. Long Middle School in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. Mr. Copeland will replace Nick Lasker, who has taken a job in Arkansas. Long is one of six middle schools in the district.

CFBISD is led by LH’s own Bobby Burns, father of graduating baseball player Byron. Burns has taken heat in the press lately for lingering in LH despite their district’s rule that the superintendent must live within their district boundaries. It would feel good to be mad at Burns for stealing such an effective administrator from LH and RISD, but I can’t quite get there.  Mr. Copeland is a rare combination of cooperative leader, commanding disciplinarian and lovable cheerleader for the kids, and Burns demonstrates wisdom by wooing Copeland away.

Copeland was approved by the CFBISD May 27 and has begun the process of wrapping things up in LH and meeting his new teachers and parents at Long. Best of luck, Mr. Copeland – you’ll be missed.
