Don’t call it “Battle of the Bands.” LHHS senior Shea Snider says “in light of the earthquake in Haiti and in the spirit of helping victims who’ve lost their homes and become refugees,” the annual event sponsored by the LH chapter of Aid for Refugees (AiR) will be called “Lake Highlands for Haiti – Concert for the Cause.”

AiR, founded in 2008 by LHHS graduate Shay O’Brien, has enlisted the support of LH’s Student Council and National Honor Society. The student groups will award service hours to students who purchase concert tickets and t-shirts. “That will make a big difference, money-wise,” Snider told me. “It’s all about collecting as much money as we can to help as many people as we can.”

Snider, who took over as president when mentor O’Brien graduated, says LH is showing their support. “People have really stepped out to help us,” she said. “It shows you how much support you can gather in our neighborhood. Ms. [Amy] Craft [sponsor of AiR], Ms. [Katie] Motram and Ms. [Helen] Saxon [sponsors of NHS] have been very helpful, and Mr. [David] Wood [senior English teachers] gave me a pat on the back yesterday. This has been a big lesson in trusting others who have the same passions you do.”

After the jump, student bands will perform but not compete, and will include:

• nooks and crannies – Luke Moser, Jordan Chumbley, Patrick Thornton, Martin White and Steven Heger,

• Deep Kick – Reagan McCreary (Jesuit), Adam Gonzales (ESD), Mason Young (ESD) and John Cook (Parish),

• Sidereal – Ryan Berg, Thomas Mullins, Matt Smith, Patrick Ford and Jordan Brooks,

• Martin White – soloist

• Inevitable Fall – Stephen Allen and Will Hughes,

• Downtown Formula – Garrett Alloway,

• International Intercom – Jordan Chumbley, Max Aman, Matt Smith and Patrick Ford, and

• Matt & Ryan – Matt Smith and Ryan Mellinger.

Senior Luke Trowbridge will be the sound technician for the concert, and junior Sarah Chrisenberry will lead the student stage and light crew. The Bell Boys are scheduled to introduce the bands. The concert will be held in the LHHS auditorium, and tickets are $5 at the door. T-shirts (logo shown) will be on sale for $10.
