Projects eight and nine on the Dallas Parks and White Rock Lake Conservancy to-do list are, respectively, park furnishings/signage, for which the city needs about $800,000 and reforestation, for which they need $750,000. So far no money is allotted for either of these projects, but thanks to the help from For the Love of the Lake, reforestation efforts are well underway. In 2006, they, along with the parks department, established the Celebration Tree Grove, which recognizes folks who donate funds for new trees, or those the donors wish to memorialize. The grove, boasting myriad types of trees including cypress, oak, elm, cherry, buckthorn, holly offers a central area for honoring tree donors, rather than having multiple plaques around the lake/park. This donor recognition system has since been implemented in parks throughout the city, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Willis Winters says. New signage and furnishings on the west side of the lake will be consistent with the rustic stone theme along the east side of the lake.
Also, speaking of that rustic stone … if you drive, run, or cycle near the White Rock Spillway, you’ve probably noticed a lot of progress lately. Yesterday, during an interview for another story, the parks board representative for district 9, Darren Boruff, said that the spillway is on track for completion in April, and, he says, it is going to look great.
