Dallas law enforcement personnel Saturday played in the Big Russian Shootout to raise funds for gang unit improvements and at-risk youth—all in honor of a fallen friend. Senior Cprl Norman Smith got the nickname "Big Russian" from members of the South Dallas communities where he served with the Dallas Police Gang Unit. "He wasn’t Russian," says event organizer Taly Haffar, smiling. "They just called him ‘White Russian’ and ‘Big Russian’ because he stood out in the neighborhood." Smith was loved by coworkers and civilians alike. Even the gang members liked the officer. Many gang members and ex-gang members showed up at Smith’s memorial service, Haffar says.

Donations to the Norman Smith Memorial Fund can be sent to 6154 St. Moritz, Dallas, TX 75214. Video after the jump.
