This Saturday, St. Thomas Aquinas will host the inaugural "Big Russian Shootout", a three-versus-three basketball tournament for law enforcement personnel.

The charity event serves the memory of Norm Smith, a Dallas police officer gunned down in the line of duty, says event organizer Taly Haffar.

“Norm’s life, and the lives of all fallen officers, will not be forgotten. The honor, duty, and courage of these protectors of our community should forever be recognized. We have come together with Norm’s comrades in the Dallas Police Department in an effort to memorialize this outstanding individual.”

Spectators will enjoy free admission, though donations will be graciously accepted. Half the funds collected from entry fees, sponsorships, concession sales and donations will be designated for training local gang officers in the hope of preventing future unnecessary losses. The other half of the funds will go to a local youth center chosen by Norm’s widow, Dallas Police Lieutenant Regina Smith.

Event sponsors include Dick’s Sporting Goods; The Assist the Officer Foundation of the Dallas Police Department; Toby, Shelley, and Shelby Shook; Phillip Linder; Bill and Minnie Caruth; and Mike and Brandi Mitchell.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at 3741 Abrams. Find all the info you need right here.
