As season debuts go, it wasn’t the greatest start for Lake Highlands. Devonte Sunwengham fielded the opening kickoff at his own six yard line and then casually allowed his momentum to carry him out of bounds. So the LH offense started in a deep hole and was forced to punt after five plays.

LH’s first turn on defense was more positive. Although Mesquite gained a first down, the drive was soon nullified with a big sack by Tre’ Stewart.

The next time the Wildcats touched the ball, it was a classic Ricky Zorn-led drive. Zorn hit Anthony Harris for a seven-yard TD and a 7-0 lead.

Harris has proven to be LH’s most reliable receiver in the early going. He has six catches for 45 yards so far.

Mesquite put together a long drive deep into LH territory. The Skeeters were going for it on fourth-and-two at the LH eight yard line when a Wildcat jumped offsides, gifting Mesquite with a first down. Mesquite QB Davian Harper scored easily on the next play.

LH marched to another score to reclaim the lead, 14-7, with Zorn keeping on an run inside for the score. Zorn has 12 carries for 60 yards and has completed 12 of 15 passes for 101 yards.

With the lead again, the LH defense made a terrific stand by holding Mesquite to a four-and-out. Then Zorn made his one mistake so far, lofting a pass as the pocket collapsed around him. Zorn was hit from behind as he threw and the ball fluttered into the hands of Mesquite’s Toby Benson for an interception.

The LH defense forced another four-and-out and the offense marched into Mesquite territory to set up Jason Dann’s 38-yard field goal with 3.5 seconds left in the half.

Desmond Roland has been a playmaker for LH with six carries for 53 yards and two catches for 33 yards. Sunwengham, after his early error, has two carries for 12 yards and two catches for nine yards.
