Even amongst the frenzy of people at the Watermelon Feed last Friday, Kent Perkins could be spotted from a mile away.

“He is big,” coach Scott Smith said.

Perkins is only 14 years old and is already playing on the varsity squad as an offensive tackle. Due to Kurt Stadelmann’s back injury, on Friday, Perkins was practicing with the first team offense, as well.

“He will be one of the top five recruits by his senior year,” Stadelmann said.

Those are big expectations being put on a freshman who just recently started playing the game of football.

“I have two years of experience playing football,” Perkins said. “This is all new to me.”

Along with lack of experience, Perkins will have to adjust to the dramatic change in level of play from junior high to varsity.

“It’s all about repetition for him,” Smith said. “He has to get used to the speed and be mentally and physically prepared to play 5A high school football.”

Perkins has many hurdles in front of him, but from what his teammates are saying about him,  he will be just fine.

“He is legit and can contribute a lot and right away,” said quarterback Ricky Zorn.

Perkins said all he needs is some time to learn and really understand the game.

“Once I get it down, I will be good,” Perkins said.
