Our food photographer, Mark Davis, recently suggested that I try out a new nail salon in our neighborhood called Polished. It’s in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Royal and Central Expressway. Some of the women in his life had raved about how clean it was and how the nail technicians took plenty of time on the massage portions of the manicure and pedicure.

A friend of mine visited this weekend, so we decided to try it out. The place was almost empty on Saturday evening, and we tried to leave because we didn’t want to wait another 30 minutes or an hour for a technician to be available. But Tom, the owner, convinced us to stay. Within minutes, we each had two people working on our fingers and toes, plus a chair massage for our backs and feet. Tom also offers a glass of either red or white wine to all of his 21-and-over customers.

The place was quite clean and organized, and though I’m a bit wary of spa pedicure chairs, I didn’t feel too nervous. It was a relaxing experience, and all of the technicians were thorough, including Tom, who did my friend’s manicure himself. With the current back-to-school special, you can get a manicure for half price when you purchase a pedicure, and my friend’s total was $36 for both. (I had a French manicure and pedicure done, which was $10 more, and I recommend just the basic polish. Though the technicians were careful and thorough, my friend’s nails look much better for $10 cheaper.)

Another fun fact: Tom told us that Caroline, the wife of Mi Cocina owner Mico, regularly brings a group of friends to the salon for all of them to get their nails done.
