Easter Concert. On Palm Sunday, April 16, 4 p.m., the NorthPark Presbyterian Church will perform the Easter sections of Handel’s Messiah. A small reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The church is located at 9555 North Central.

 

 

 

Thirst Quencher. Echo Theatre presents the Dallas premiere of Eve Ensler’s award-winning Lemonade April 13-29, at The Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E.Lawther Drive.  Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 pm.  Two Saturday matinees of LEMONADE are scheduled for April 22 and 29 at 2:00pm. Audience members are advised that the play contains mature themes. Tour Historic Homes. East Dallas neighbors are kicking off their spring home tours with the 23rd Annual Munger Place Historic District Tour of Homes and the 9th  annual “Much Ado About Hollywood” home tour. The Munger event will be held April 15-16;  tickets to tour one of this country’s largest collection of prairie-style homes may be purchased at the Lakewood Minyard Store for $8 in advance; tickets at the door are $10. The Hollywood tour will be held April 29-April 30; tickets to tour one of the largest collections of stone-embellished brick Tudor Cottages in the nation are $10 and can be purchased the week prior to the tour at the Lakewood Minyard Store or at Elliott’s Hardware at 4901 Maple Ave. Tickets are available at Lindsey Park Pavilion at Tenison Memorial Parkway and Lindsley Ave. the day of the event.

 

 

 

EDUCATION

 

 

 

Scholarships Awarded.  Travis L. Brown and Jean Anne Haire, sixth graders at Highlander-Carden School, were both awarded top academic scholarships from the Lutheran High School.  These scholarships are $1000 a year for six years.  Both students scored in the top 5% and will be entering seventh grade at LHS in the fall.

 

 

 

Early Childhood PTA.  On April 12, the Lake Highlands Area Early Childhood PTA will gather for its monthly membership meeting at Highlands Christian Church at 9949 McCree Road, from 9:00 – 11:00 a. m.  Becky Teter, who is a mother, a grandmother, a former pediatric nurse at Scottish Rite Hospital, and a Lake Highlands resident, will present a program titled, “Home on The Range: Communication.”  This program will encourage mothers to utter words to their children that help and heal rather than hurt.  She will encourage mothers to create a home where “never is heard, a discouraging word.”  For more information call Meghan Hunter at 214-503-6133.

Free Classes. The Dallas Area Parkinson Society’s free classes will be hosted by the Skillman Church of Christ, 3014 Skillman Street. New participants for instruction in speech and physical therapy can enroll now. Caregivers as well as those affected by the nerve disorder may attend. Each class is bilingual. The Skillman Church of Christ has provided facilities for Parkinsonism classes as a community service for the past 15 years. Call 214-823-2179 for details.

 

 

 

Good Reading. The Skillman Church of Christ, 3014 Skillman Street, invites anyone in the neighborhood to stop by the library and browse its shelves displaying the works of outstanding Christian writers of the 20th century including Max Lucado, C. S. Lewis, Charles Swindoll and R. C. Sproul. Books may be checked out, as well as books recorded on cassette or videotapes. This is good reading for all ages. Call 214-823-2179.

ATTENTION SENIORS

 

 

 

Adventures In Learning. The Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center announces the spring Semester of Adventures in Learning for senior adults March 31 through May 31. The stimulating classes, activities, and programs include square dancing, book reviews, language classes, and many more. One new program added to the extensive offerings is learning to create and produce a cable television program with the Center’s crew at Dallas Community Television. Participants bring a sack lunch as beverage and dessert are provided. Cost is $20 per full semester. Most classes are at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church located at 3204 Skillman Avenue.
