Brooks Wood ’88, who is now a bank employee in Austin, spoke at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Japan about an amazing thing he accomplished.

After many years of estrangement from his father, Wood decided on a whim to try and contact his father in 1991. He discovered his father had passed away in 1989 from AIDS. Confronted with grieving the loss of a father he would never have the chance of knowing, Wood channeled his grief into the formation of the E.C. Wood Foundation. Named in memory of his father, the foundation provides education and therapy services for AIDS caregivers.

Quoted recently in the Austin American-Statesman, Wood pointed out that these caregivers are gifted people who choose to go into a career where they are dealing with dying people day in and day out. The caregivers must have an outlet and a place to gather strength for the endless job ahead.

Wood has indeed found a way to honor his father’s legacy and create a relationship with him through his compassionate outreach and dedication to the community.

Making Her Love a Career

Kristin Cabaniss ’84 was a member of the Junior Varsity and Varsity Lady Cats basketball teams for three years in high school. She catapulted her love and talent for the game of basketball into a career.

Beginning this fall, Cabaniss will take over the Lady Eagles Varsity Basketball team for Richardson High School, where she was an assistant for three years and coached the JV volleyball and basketball teams.

Cabaniss sees this opportunity as a big challenge, but is not discouraged by the Lady Eagles performance of only two victories last season. She plans to get more involved in the junior high programs to help boost the number of players coming into the high school arena.

Algebra I will also be on her roster of duties at Richardson High. Cabaniss had taught in the computer instruction department at Pearce High School.

Cabaniss’ mom is also an RISD employee. Kathy Cabaniss is the librarian at Merriman Park Elementary School.

From the Golf Course to Chimneys

We reported on LH resident and grad Trey Knox ’78 several months ago in his march towards professional golf. He is now a certified instructor and a member of the United States Golf Teachers Association.

In the off-season, Knox trades in his golf visor to operate his chimney sweep operation. He personally goes from “rooftop to rooftop” making sure chimneys are safe for the woodburning months.

You can contact him for either service at 341-0516.
